The Noon Gun is just down the street from our apartment and dates back to the beginning of British rule here in Hong Kong. It is located on the first plot of land to be sold by public auction. It was purchased by the Jardine Trading Company. The gun was fired as a salute to the Taipan of Jardines whenever he entered or left the harbor.
The Typhoon Shelter is located behind a rock wall that extends out into the Harbor. It was built so that ships would have a place to go and be protected during a bad storm.
The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is located at the entrance to the Typhoon Shelter. I'm sure that's because all those milion dollar yachts are the first that need to be protected.
These are small sailboats that you can rent to explore the harbor on your own. Of course, it would help if you knew how to sail.
Inside the Typhoon Shelter is a small remnant of boat people. Here you can see "Grandma" preparing vegetables for the evening meal. When she dumps the scraps into the water, it attracts schools of little fish who have learned where a free meal comes from.
Grandpa is standing beside a 19th century ship's bell and the Noon Gun. When the gun is fired, eight bells are sounded signalling the end of the fore-noon watch.

Loading the gun. Today a 3-pound quick firing naval gun is used--but only after numerous complaints about the excessive noise from the original 6-pound cannon.
Ready. Aim. Fire.

A "winter" flower in Victoria Park.
Of course, Grandma has to peel it apart to see what's going on "inside".
