Our Trip to Ping Shan in the New Territories

On Saturday, December 13th, we went to Ping Shan in the New Territories to visit the Tang Clan Museum. The Tang Clan first settled the area in the 12th century.

A typical Chinese bed--then and now--it's like sleeping on a rock.

The Chinese have always loved the competition of fighting crickets and the gambling that goes with it. These containers were used for catching, storing and
training the crickets.

After settling in Ping Shan, the Tang Clan established “wais” or walled villages. They built ancestral halls, study halls, pagodas and temples for ancestral worship.

Time for lunch. How about some delicious-looking flattened geese?

This was the beautiful Tag Ancestral Hall. It was used as a guest house for prominent visitors and scholars.

This is the kitchen in the Tang Ancestral Hall. It was considered very modern with sky lights and a chimney that goes all the way out of the house.

The walls in the hall were very ornate. When it rained water would flow out of the fish's mouth.

This is one of the gods at the Yeung Hau Temple. He looks a lot like a Chinese Santa Claus. He is actually Kam Fa or the patron saint of expectant mothers. He's going to oversee the rest of Shurelle's pregnancy.

A water lily we passed on the Heritage Trail.

We ended our day at the Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda. It is 600 years old and the only ancient pagoda left in Hong Kong. It was built to improve the "fung shui" of the area. It was supposed to ward off evil spirits and prevent flooding.

Nice pictures. I'll tell Shurelle to take a look at her patron saint.
